Note to self: Get one of these for work

Mobile Satellite Access

Gizmodo notes
the SpeedRay 3000 by RaySat basically turns anything on wheels into an instant WiFi zone. Just place this round antenna onto the roof of your car and you’ll get satellite TV as well as broadband access.

Using GPS, the system will give you an always-on connection —so as long as you have a line of sight to the satellite, you’re golden. Of course, unless you’re living in your automobile, you may not want to drop the $7000 this thing will cost you. Although if you’re a fan of motor homes, this would be your chance to upgrade the old homestead. Look for it sometime this summer.

DSL Reports adds that the unit was introduced at last years CES.

Raysat's unit is unique in providing in-motion, 2-way satellite access anywhere. It might be a good way to spend that homeland security check.

KVH embedded EV-DO into their car satellite receiver (below).

Connection speeds for EVDO service are similar to residential DSL broadband service, with a maximum speed of 2.4 Mbps and typical speeds of 400 Kbps to 700 Kbps. When EVDO is unavailable, the system will automatically switch to standard 1xRTT data service, which is available in most cellular coverage areas. 1xRTT has a maximum upload and download speed of 144 Kbps, and typical speeds of 50 Kbps to 80 Kbps.

By using EVDO services for connectivity along with built-in Wi-Fi output, the vehicle or vessel is turned into a “mobile hot spot.” Passengers will be able to connect to other Internet services using Wi-Fi-enabled laptop computers, PDAs and other devices. KVH doesn't expect the new receiver to become available until mid-year. No pricing info.

C/Net has a rundown of other automotive gear at CES.
