Verizon Reverses Itself on Restricting Political Speech

Verizon Reverses Itself on Abortion Messages - New York Times: "Saying it had the right to block “controversial or unsavory” text messages, Verizon Wireless last week rejected a request from Naral Pro-Choice America, the abortion rights group, to make Verizon’s mobile network available for a text-message program. But the company reversed course this morning, saying it had made a mistake."

Looks like somebody's been reading my blog, doesn't it? ;-)

Verizon Restricts Political Speech

Verizon Rejects Abortion Rights Group’s Text Messages - New York Times: "Saying it had the right to block “controversial or unsavory” text messages, Verizon Wireless has rejected a request from Naral Pro-Choice America, the abortion rights group, to make Verizon’s mobile network available for a text-message program."

I'm not impressed.

Improved Inet Performance

Standard DSL is good out to about 20,000 feet (or 6,100 meters for the more cosmopolitan of you)from what they call a 'Central Office', which is usually neither central nor an office, but IS more along the lines of a distribution point for the telco carrier's equipment.

Well, the nearest goddam DSL C.O. is something in the neighborhood of 19,500 feet from my house, which means my DSL was always a miserable rip-off.

Luckily, my employer agreed to pickup the tab for my cable modem service, which, under most circumstances, is less reliable than DSL, but occasionally you might be in a lucky neighborhood where nobody else is using the shared bandwidth, so you might get the better performance that cable modems are capable of. like this:

Much better than the crap like 384kbps I was getting on Verizon DSL, back in the spring, eh?

Still, I've only had this cable service, which I've seen peak at around 15 mbps, over the summer, so Verizon finally gets their act together and start spooling out the high-speed FIOS service! See, I'm happy with my 15 mbps. What do I want 50 mbps for?

(That's rhetorical, btw. I'll eat all they can throw at me!!!)

Wacky Oregon Governor, Circa 1970

Over lunch I got to talking with a former hippie, today, who explained to me that not all Republican politicians are Bad People, much as it may look like it, lately. What kind of a Republican does it take to push a former hippie to a statement like that? One from 1970, you say? You’re in the right neighborhood, then! He pointed me to the story of
“Oregon's legendary governor Tom McCall [ who] received word that tens of thousands of young people were on the move for a massive demonstration against the Vietnam War. Their target: an American Legion convention in Portland, featuring a keynote address by President Richard Nixon.

McCall had to make a decision, and fast. His solution was to hold a rock concert.”

-Oregon Public Broadcasting

Check out these further details and then try to imagine the current administration applying such creativity to dealing with their opponents. I’ve lived in Oregon for 14 years (jeezus, 14 years, already???) and don’t know how I missed this story. I’ve got to read up on this guy. He’s known for a lot of fairly wild stories, only one of which I know… now!
