Over lunch I got to talking with a former hippie, today, who explained to me that not all Republican politicians are Bad People, much as it may look like it, lately. What kind of a Republican does it take to push a former hippie to a statement like that? One from 1970, you say? You’re in the right neighborhood, then! He pointed me to the story of

“Oregon's legendary governor Tom McCall [ who] received word that tens of thousands of young people were on the move for a massive demonstration against the Vietnam War. Their target: an American Legion convention in Portland, featuring a keynote address by President Richard Nixon.

McCall had to make a decision, and fast. His solution was to hold a rock concert.”

I’ve lived in Oregon for 14 years (jeezus, 14 years, already???) and don’t know how I missed this story. I’ve got to read up on this guy. He’s known for a lot of fairly wild stories, only one of which I know… now!
